Work is due to start on the former Glasgow Meat Market site “imminently,” a meeting heard.

The historic east end plot is to become home to community and business space, padel courts, a linear park and other features.

The first step will see the conservation work to preserve the listed shed structure take place.

Providing the latest status on the scheme, a council official said: “They are seeking to get on site imminently – not sure if it will be in the next week or month. They have funding in place.”

Responding to a request for an update from Councillor Anthony Carroll, Dennistoun, the council official added: “This is for the first stage of works which is consolidation of the listed shed structure.”

The development is due to be finished in 2029.

The Meat Market Regeneration Community Interest Company is redeveloping the site.

Speaking at this week’s economy, housing, transport and regeneration city policy committee Greens councillor Carroll sought assurance the work would begin in the Autumn.

A council report presented to the meeting said: “statutory consents have been granted and an initial phase of work focussing on refurbishment of the historic structure is due to commence on site in Autumn 2026.

“Future phases, including new build accommodation and a linear park, to follow.”

The Glasgow Meat Market dates back to 1879 and closed in the 1980s. The area has been vacant since the 1990s when a car auction on the site closed.

Funding for the site has come from a number of sources including a City Deal grant and National Lottery Heritage Fund support.
