Proposed plans for George Square

The redevelopment of George Square will take a significant step forward early next month when work begins at the junction of Queen St and St Vincent Place.
A phased reopening of the square is underway with the north carriageway and footways already back in use. The western section is due to become available to the public by the end of August with families invited to celebrate this milestone with Street Play sessions and other activities in early September.
With construction of the new the southern carriageway of the square currently progressing, work on the Queen St-St Vincent Place junction will get underway on August 4 .
In keeping with the rest of the Square, granite stones will be laid across the new junction, pavements widened and new traffic lights installed. To ensure work is carried out safely and efficiently, the junction will be closed to all vehicles for the duration of the work, which is expected to last for ten weeks.
Pedestrian access will be maintained across the junction for the duration of works while road traffic arrangements will be put in place to allow service vehicles to reach premises close to the junction.
With the junction at North Frederick St due to be completed by the end of July and refurbished statues due to return in early August, Councillor Angus Millar, City Convener for City Centre Recovery, has welcomed the progress being made on the redevelopment of George Square.
Councillor Millar said: “The redevelopment of George Square is really taking shape and we are now getting a strong feel for what the finished square will look like.
“Work is moving forward across the square to create its new layout and lay new stone surfacing with renovations on the Sir Walter Scott column and the Cenotaph also going very well.
“The reconstruction of the junction at Queen St and St Vincent Place is a crucial part of the redevelopment of the square. This will be the main route through the square for west bound traffic and also create a highly attractive entry point to the square for people on foot.
“The start of work on the Queen St junction is a big step closer to the completion of the square. We look forward to welcoming people on to the square as sections of work are finished and can be reopened.”
During work on the Queen St junction, access to St Vincent place will be achieved from West George St via Anchor Lane. As this route cannot be used by vehicles over 10 metres long, service providers are advised to deploy suitably sized vehicles.
The bus gate at Nelson Mandela Place will remain in operation, but an exemption for goods vehicles will be introduced while work is underway. A loading bay will also be created on St Vincent Place between Anchor Lane and George Square to help service vehicles reach business premises.
To allow access to premises on Queen St to the south of the junction, the bus gates at the junction of Queen St and Ingram St will be suspended. Queen St will also become a temporary two-way street between the junction and Ingram St to allow vehicles to access.
A diversion route for north and west bound traffic has been created along Ingram St, High St, George St, Montrose St, Cathedral St, North Hanover St, Killermont Street and West Nile Street. Road users are asked to plan their journey is advance to help minimise the impact of the closure on their travel. Bus passengers should check with their operator for any changes to their service.
The George Square redevelopment is a central part of the £140 Avenues and Avenues Plus programmes, which has reached its midway point.
Avenues on Cowcaddens Road and Dobbies Loan completed last month while Argyle Street West is almost fully finished with resurfacing on the Hope St junction due to be undertaken on August 4. South Portland St Avenue is due to be completed in August while work is now underway on Argyle St East. Construction of the Stockwell St Avenue has been temporarily paused while other works are underway.
