Convener of education and communities, Councillor Jim Clocherty meets the young people involved in the Active School sports coaching academy

More than 30 young people have signed up to a new programme to develop young leaders and assistant sports coaches.
The Active Schools Sports Coaching Academy is aimed at young people in Inverclyde who are in S4-S6. Following an informal selection process there are more than 30 young people enrolled in the year-long academy.
They will now work towards achieving the National Progression Award SCQF Level 5 in Sports Coaching from Qualifications Scotland. The Level 5 NPA introduces learners to the role of a coaching assistant within a supervised environment and develops an understanding of professional practice in coaching.
As part of their training, the young people will come together for training days as well as an overnight residential. They are expected to complete 10 hours of sports coaching outside at a cluster primary school or their own secondary school while being mentored and supervised by a member of the Inverclyde Active Schools/Sports Development team.
Coaches will select a specific sport to focus on which will include football, rugby, netball, athletics or generic multi-sports. This aims to develop the young people’s skills within their comfort zone and within the sport they are passionate about. This also ensures that they continue to develop as coaches in their chosen field and progress on their coaching pathway.
Councillor Jim Clocherty, convener of education and communities said: “It was great to meet the young people at the launch of this coaching academy.
“They are motivated and engaged and it is clear they are passionate about sport and coaching young people.
“It is really heartening that the first year of the programme has got off to such a good start with over 30 signed up.
“I know the Active Schools team are looking forward to working with the group and I hope they have a great year.”
